A hot flow anomaly at Mars

چکیده
One of the most important modes of planet/solar wind interaction are “foreshock transients” such as hot flow anomalies (HFAs). Here we present early observations by the NASAMars Atmosphere and Voltatile EvolutioN spacecraft, confirming their presence at Mars and for the first time at an unmagnetized planet revealing the underlying ion perturbations that drive the phenomenon, finding them to be weaker than at magnetized planets. Analysis revealed the HFA to be virtually microscopic: the smallest on record at ∼2200 km across and commensurate with the local proton gyroradius, resulting in a much stronger perturbation in solar wind protons than alpha particles. As at Venus, despite being physically diminutive, the HFA is still large (0.66 RM) when compared to the relative size of the induced magnetosphere. Given the associated order of magnitude decrease in solar wind dynamic pressure (411 pPa⇒ 70 pPa), we find that HFAs at Mars have the potential to directly impact the topside ionosphere. We thus hypothesize that the loss of a planetary magnetic dynamo left Mars far more vulnerable to the pressure pulses resulting from HFAs and related foreshock transients.

Effect of width, amplitude, and position of a core mantle boundary hot spot on core convection and dynamo action
Within the fluid iron cores of terrestrial planets, convection and the resulting generation of global magnetic fields are controlled by the overlying rocky mantle. The thermal structure of the lower mantle determines how much heat is allowed to escape the core. Hot lower mantle features, such as the thermal footprint of a giant impact or hot mantle plumes, will locally reduce the heat flux thro...
متن کاملCharge-exchange in the Magnetosheaths of Venus and Mars: a Comparison
The amount of solar wind absorption due to charge-exchange in the Martian magnetosheath is evaluated and found to be about an order of magnitude less than that in the Venus magnetosheath. This difference might explain the observed difference in the scaled position and shape between the shocks at Venus and Mars. The lower solar wind absorption for Mars is attributable to the less dense hot oxyge...
متن کاملPredicting Flow Number of Asphalt Mixtures Based on the Marshall Mix design Parameters Using Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS)
Rutting is one of the major distresses in the flexible pavements, which is heavily influenced by the asphalt mixtures properties at high temperatures. There are several methods for the characterization of the rutting resistance of asphalt mixtures. Flow number is one of the most important parameters that can be used for the evaluation of rutting. The flow number is measured by the dynamic creep...
متن کاملUnusual magnetic signature of the Hadriaca Patera Volcano: Implications for early Mars
[1] Typically, Martian volcanoes show either a total absence of crustal magnetism or a local magnetic mimimum. Hadriaca Patera is the only volcano on Mars with a clear positive magnetic anomaly directly over the volcanic edifice, as determined by electron reflection magnetometry. Hadriaca’s topography, lava flow crater ages, gravity anomaly, position relative to the Hellas rim and past aqueous ...
متن کاملGeologic Model of the Geothermal Anomaly at Pilgrim Hot Springs, Seward Peninsula, Alaska
Pilgrim Hot Springs has a known shallow geothermal reservoir with temperatures approaching 91 ̊C in the top 100 meters of the system that underlies the main hot springs area of 1.5 km. The deeper reservoir is less understood with similar temperatures at the basement surface 320 meters directly beneath the hot springs. The aspect of this research is to create a stratigraphic model and delineate p...
